Textile Taster:  Tea Towel Collage

Last year the vintage tea towel collection of our member, Annamaria was exhibited at The Logan Historical Museum and a collection of Queensland place inspired tea towels was shown at The State Library the year before. These humble kitchen items are becoming something more than an overlooked sign of women’s work.

At this meeting we will experiment with collage inspired by Margie Creek’s small works made with vintage tea towels.

There will be no tutor but leading the activity will be Ann, Kathryn  and Annamaria. 

We will cut and glue fabrics making a small textile collage. Stitch can be added but this is experimenting with colour, layout, and composition. It will be simply playing, sampling, exploring and experimenting.

Please bring

1. Tea towels , softer and worn with time or crisp and new. Ragged and with holes so you are happy to cut up. Maybe one with a image you like
2. Fabric scissors and smaller embroidery scissors
3. Cereal box cardboard or linen as backing to determine size
4. Other fabrics that go well as you see in the image some chicken scratch work on gingham, so perhaps check fabric, crochet lace edges
5. Glue stick or fabric glue
6. Threads both embroidery and sewing if you wish to add this to your piece
7. Some ephemera such as rickrack, braid, bias binding.

June activity: Textile Stories
Bring along a textile piece that you have from around the world, from your travels or a gift from another, or one that has been in your collection. A keeper.  A teller of tales. Tell us the story, the provenance, the reason it appeals and any research you may have done around the particular textile. 
Listen to stories that connect us to family, culture, traditions, special places and memories. 

ATASDA members will have a display of beautiful textile works for sale as part of the BVAC Pop-Up Shop held at the Auditorium at Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha.

Textile Taster: make a sheet of silk paper

Betty Bull will show us the technique sometimes called 'silk fusion'. it allows you to play with soft silk fibres (and/or merino wool tops) to create a versatile piece of fabric that can be used as the base for many projects, such as journal covers.

Betty will provide textile medium, silk threads, merino wool tops, silk hankies etc, dishwashing liquid, tulle, paper towels.

Please bring: 4 clothes pegs and 1 small paint brush or foam roller.

Textile artist Wendi Trulson will present a one day workshop on 5 September at BVAC. 
Eco Dyeing Workshop: Leaves, Stitches & Stories

Together we’ll explore the alchemy of the dye pot, where humble gifts from nature—onion skins, flowers, leaves, bark, and even everyday kitchen scraps—transform into magical marks.
You’ll create your own concertina book filled with nature’s imprints. Stitch into the pages, leave your own marks, or fashion a pocket or two for gathered treasures. Then, guided step by step,

I’ll show you how to eco-dye the concertina book with vegetation and let the simmering pot reveal its secrets.
Come ready to play, to notice, and to let nature write its story on your cloth and paper.'

In this three-hour Indigo dyeing workshop, led by Judy Worsley, you will be introduced to a range of Shibori techniques. You will practice using these techniques on your I metre of quilting fabric. Some of these you can dye in the beginning of the workshop.

You can then decide how to dye your tea towel sized piece of linen and a silk scarf available for an additional materials cost of $20 (cash on the day). After completing these two major pieces, you can then dye more of your quilting fabric if time permits.

Please wear sun smart clothing and a hat, and please understand that your footwear may be discoloured with the indigo dye.
